“The 1959 Coronet, Royal, and Custom Royal used a DeSoto Fireflite chassis but had less ornate trim. Power came from the 230 cu in “Getaway” L-head straight-6 or the 325 cu in “Red Ram” V8. As the 1950s progressed, the ‘Jet Age’ exercised increasing influence in automobile styling, most memorably in the form of tail fins that became ever more extreme as the years passed, reaching their zenith in 1959. Chrysler’s advanced new three speed Torqueflite automatic transmission joined the two-speed Powerflite on the Dodge option list, and both transmissions utilized push-button selectors on the instrument panel. The “Forward Look” styling, dubbed “swept wing” for the Dodge nameplate, featured tall, sweeping fins, copious amounts of chrome trim, wraparound windshields, and exhaust-style taillights. The cars were also long, low, and wide, distinct from anything other manufacturers were putting on the road.”
